Why You’ll Love Grilled Asparagus
Throw some asparagus spears on the grill and you instantly have the makings of a beautiful vegetable side that goes with so many dishes from Air Fryer Hamburgers, to Broiled Sesame Maple Salmon, to Balsamic Marinated Flank Steak, and so much more. And it’s so easy!
Just drizzle the asparagus with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper, and let the grill cook it to perfection. I know there are a lot of grilled asparagus recipes out there—what makes mine the best? I’m glad you asked! In my opinion, mine stands apart from the rest because it’s:
- Simple and reliable. There’s nothing fussy or fancy here, and I love my recipe for its sweet simplicity, plus it always turns out well!
- Ready in 10 minutes or less. My recipe is the definition of a fast vegetable side dish! Depending on the heat of your grill, you need just 8-10 minutes to cook the asparagus.
- Full of asparagus flavor. This recipe needs just 4 ingredients to make, and allows the asparagus flavor to really shine through (and if you want a recipe that has a few more extras, try my Grilled Lemon Parmesan Asparagus).
- Texturally amazing. The grill turns the asparagus lightly crisp on the outside with the inside fork tender and just soft enough.
What You’ll Need
A short ingredients list means you’ll have this recipe ready to go fast. Here’s a look at what goes into it, and I’ve included the full ingredient amounts in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Asparagus: Choose fresh, bright green asparagus with firm tips and stalks.
- Olive Oil: I use extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil.
- Salt and Pepper: I like a mix of Kosher salt and black pepper.
How to Grill Asparagus
You can easily halve or double this recipe, depending on how much you want. Here’s a look at how to make this easy recipe, with the detailed instructions included in the recipe card.
- Prep asparagus. Wash, dry, and snap the tough ends off each stalk of asparagus.
- Add olive oil. Drizzle olive oil over the asparagus and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Add to grill. Place the asparagus on the preheated grill over medium heat.
- Grill. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping over once or twice while cooking.
How Long Does It Take?
The key to perfectly grilled asparagus is the size of the asparagus and not overcooking it. I like to use asparagus stalks that are a medium thickness. (If they’re too thin, they burn too easily and fall between the grates of the grill; if they’re too thick, they can be tough.) I cook them for no more than 10 minutes, sometimes a minute less, depending on their size. You want the asparagus to be cooked through and lightly tender, but not mushy.
How to Store and Reheat
You can eat leftover asparagus warm or cold (I like to add it to salads):
- Fridge – Transfer cooled asparagus to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To Reheat – Warm the asparagus on a sheet pan in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes until warm, or place them back on the grill for a minute or two to reheat them. You can also reheat the asparagus in the microwave for 1 minute, although it may get a bit softer if heated in the microwave.
Make It a Meal
- For brunch. Dress up your asparagus with a dollop of Hollandaise Sauce and serve it alongside poached eggs on Gluten Free English Muffins or Gluten Free Eggs Benedict.
- Steak. Grilled asparagus is just right with my Grilled Steak Salad Recipe, and it’s also wonderful with Easy Steak Bites, Caprese Filet Mignon Steak, or Grilled Flat Iron Steak.
- Burgers. Go vegetarian with Black Bean Quinoa Burgers, or serve asparagus with Greek Burgers, Italian Meatball Burgers, or French Onion Stuffed Burgers!
- Salmon. Swap the green beans in my Pesto Salmon Sheet Pan Dinner for grilled asparagus (cook it separately), or pair it with a serving of Strawberry Balsamic Salmon.
- Chicken. I have so many grilled chicken recipes that are great with grilled asparagus, like Hasselback Caprese Chicken, Asian Grilled Chicken, or Tandoori Chicken Legs!
