What You’ll Need
Grab your ingredients and get to cooking! Here’s what you’ll need. Have a look at the recipe card below for precise measurements.
- Chicken breasts – This recipe calls for boneless, skinless chicken. That’s not to say it won’t work with other cuts (with some adjustment to the cooking time). Check out the section below titled “Variation Ideas” to learn more.
- Light brown sugar – Dark brown sugar will also work for a deeper, more molasses-y flavor.
- Seasoning – I used kosher salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and chili powder. If you have a BBQ spice rub on hand, you can use 2 tablespoons of that instead. If you’re not a BBQ sauce person, you can use my Blackened Seasoning or the spice mixture from my Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken instead.
- Avocado oil – Or vegetable oil. A smidge of oil helps keep the chicken from drying out.
- BBQ sauce – Choose your favorite brand or, if you have time, make your own Honey BBQ Sauce or this Bourbon Barbecue Sauce!

How to Make Air Fryer BBQ Chicken
Ready to get started? Here’s a quick overview of how to make these tender, flavorful chicken breasts. Please see the recipe card below for more thorough instructions.
- Prep. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F.
- Pound. If the chicken pieces are very thick, place them between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound with a mallet to an even thickness (about half an inch thick).
- Make the rub. Whisk together the light brown sugar and seasonings.

- Season the chicken. Coat the chicken in oil and then toss it in the spice mixture.
- Load the air fryer. Spray the air fryer basket with nonstick and arrange the chicken in a single layer in the basket.

- Air fry. Cook for 6 minutes. Flip and cook for 4 minutes. Brush the chicken with BBQ sauce and cook for another 2-6 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
- Rest. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Tips for Success
Air fry like a pro with these simple tips and tricks from my kitchen to yours:
- Even thickness. If your chicken is thick, place it between 2 pieces of plastic wrap and pound it out to an even thickness. This will help ensure it cooks evenly and within the prescribed cooking time.
- Don’t forget to preheat. I mean it! If you start with a cold air fryer, the chicken will cook unevenly, and you’ll miss out on that perfect caramelization.
- Choose your cooking spray wisely. Make sure your nonstick cooking spray does NOT contain propellant, as it can leave a residue on your air fryer.
- Don’t crowd the air fryer. Make sure each piece of chicken has a little room to breathe in the air fryer. If you crowd the basket, the chicken will steam instead of “fry” for an unpleasant, rubbery texture.
- Use a high smoke point oil. Although you might have olive oil on hand, its relatively low smoke point makes it unsuitable for the high temperatures of an air fryer. For this recipe, opt for oils with higher smoke points, like avocado oil or vegetable oil.
- Use a meat thermometer. Depending on the size of your chicken breasts, they may finish cooking faster or slower. So, insert a meat thermometer into the largest piece. You’ll know your chicken is done when it reads 165°F.
- Let it rest. When the chicken has finished cooking, remove it from the air fryer and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving. During this time, the juices will redistribute through the meat for more tender, flavorful bites.

Variation Ideas
Feeling creative? Try one (or several!) of these fun variations on this staple air fryer recipe:
- Use a different cut of chicken. Instead of boneless, skinless chicken breasts, you are more than welcome to use bone-in, skin-on breasts, thighs, or drumsticks, like my Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Legs. Just note that different cuts require different cook times. See this chart to learn more.
- Make it spicy. Depending on your BBQ sauce, you may want to add a little spice to the picture. You can do this by adding extra chili powder to the spice rub or by whisking some hot sauce into the BBQ sauce before you brush it over the chicken.
- Total flavor swap. Not a BBQ person? Swap the rub out for simple salt and pepper, and, instead of BBQ sauce, drizzle with Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce, this Buffalo Ranch, or my Peruvian Aji Sauce after the chicken is fully cooked through.
How to Store and Reheat Extras
- Refrigerator. Once the leftovers have cooled completely, seal them in an airtight container. This chicken will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Freezer. Seal any fully cooled leftovers in an airtight freezer-safe container and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow the chicken to thaw in the fridge before reheating.
- To reheat. Reheat in the preheated air fryer at 350°F for 5 minutes, flipping halfway through. Otherwise, transfer the chicken to a baking dish (along with a couple of tablespoons of water), cover with aluminum foil, and bake at 350°F for 10 minutes or until heated through.

Make It a Meal
Sure, gooey, sticky BBQ chicken is great on its own, but it’s even better paired with the right sides. Here are some fun ways to serve it:
- Classic BBQ sides. Pair BBQ chicken with your other backyard grillin’ faves. I love it with this Bacon Ranch Potato Salad, some Hawaiian Coleslaw, and/or my Gluten-Free Cornbread.
- Family favorites. Make an easy weeknight meal the kids love by whipping up some Gluten Free Mac and Cheese on the stovetop while you steam some broccoli or carrots.
- Something green. Whether it’s easy Air Fryer Zucchini, crisp Sauteed Broccolini, or tender spears of Roasted Asparagus, this flavorful chicken loves the company of a light veggie side.
- In a salad. This is the perfect flavorful protein to add to your favorite salad. Slice it up and sub it in for the chicken in this BBQ Chicken Salad or in my Ultimate Cobb Salad.
- With a drink. Wash it all down with your favorite beverage. This Gimlet White Wine Sangria or my Lemon Limeade would be ideal!

Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Breasts
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts about 2-3 pieces (6-8 ounces each)
- 2 teaspoons light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- 1 Tablespoon avocado or vegetable oil
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce (plus additional for serving, if desired)
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 380°F. If your 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts are very thick, place them between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound with a mallet to make them thinner and an even thickness. Place them in a bowl or shallow dish.
- In a small bowl, combine the light 2 teaspoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon chili powder. Stir until combined.
- Drizzle 1 Tablespoon avocado or vegetable oil over the top of the chicken and rub it in to coat completely. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the chicken and toss to coat thoroughly.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil spray (NOT nonstick cooking spray with propellant, like Pam). Place the chicken breasts in a single layer in the air fryer and cook at 380°F for 6 minutes. Flip the chicken and cook for another 4 minutes.
- Open the air fryer and brush the chicken with ¼ cup BBQ sauce on all sides. Cook for another 2-6 minutes to caramelize the BBQ sauce, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- The spice mixture can be substituted with 2 Tablespoons of your favorite BBQ spice rub.
- You can skip the BBQ sauce and use my Blackened Seasoning or the spice mixture from my Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken.
- Do not use nonstick cooking spray with propellant, like Pam—it can leave a residue on your air fryer.
- Avoid olive oil due to its low smoke point; use avocado or vegetable oil instead.
