Satisfying Gluten-Free Bread Recipes for Every Taste!

Ever since going gluten-free, I like to think, “If you can’t find it, make it!” Especially when it comes to gluten-free bread. There’s something super satisfying about lifting a fresh loaf of homemade bread from the oven, knowing it’s 1) 100% safe to eat and 2) sure to taste amazing.

And why stop with loaves? Below you’ll find recipes for homemade pita bread, breadsticks, cheesy bread, and more. All easy to make, and totally gluten-free!

What Is the Difference Between Gluten-Free Bread and Regular Bread?

Gluten-free bread is free from gluten-containing ingredients like wheat, barley, and rye. So while regular bread is made with wheat flour, gluten-free bread is made with gluten-free flour alternatives like rice, tapioca, arrowroot, or potato flour, among others.

When it comes to taste and texture, gluten-free bread is often denser than regular bread, and some gluten-free flour has a grittier texture. The flavor of gluten-free bread also naturally varies due to the different flours used to make it.

Luckily, gluten-free bread has improved leaps and bounds in recent years! When made properly and with the correct flour and additives, it’s harder and harder to tell the difference between gluten-free bread and regular bread. That’s the goal with my recipes below!

Ingredients to Watch Out For

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: always check those labels. Some ingredients we’d assume are gluten-free can, in fact, hide sneaky traces of gluten. If you have a particularly severe gluten allergy, it’s important to know that the ingredients you’re using to bake your bread are 100% certified gluten-free. Here are some ingredients to look out for:

  • Yeast: Most commercial baking yeast is gluten-free. However, other kinds like brewer’s yeast, which is a barley byproduct of beer making, are not.
  • Mix-Ins: If you’re spicing up or otherwise adding ingredients to your bread recipe, make sure any mix-ins are also gluten-free! Spices, grains, chocolate chips, etc. are often gluten-free in theory. However, some production lines aren’t 100% gluten-free, so it’s always worthwhile to check for warnings.

Storing and Freezing Gluten-Free Bread

To freeze gluten-free bread, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, or store it airtight in a freezer bag, pressing out as much air as possible before sealing. Store it frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw frozen bread at room temperature.
