Have you tried Bang Bang sauce? This creamy, spicy dip is famous in restaurant dishes like Bang Bang shrimp, but it’s so much more than that! Ever since I started making my homemade version, I’ve found countless delicious ways to use it. With only 5 ingredients, this Bang Bang sauce recipe is quick to whip up for Bang Bang cauliflower, or I’ll serve it as a dip, burger topping, or as a condiment for meats and seafood. I cut some of the mayo in the recipe with Greek yogurt, so not only is this homemade Bang Bang sauce tasty, but it’s lighter than usual, too.

Your Sign to Make Bang Bang Sauce at Home

  • It’s quick and easy. My Bang Bang sauce recipe needs only 5 ingredients, and you can stir it together in minutes!
  • So versatile. Creamy Bang Bang sauce is for more than just shrimp! Use this DIY version on everything from meats to veggies, and more. Keep reading for my serving suggestions.
  • A lighter copycat. Unlike other Bang Bang recipes, I make my sauce with Greek yogurt and just a touch of mayonnaise to give it a rich consistency. Choose nonfat, low-fat, or whole milk yogurt to adjust the flavor and creaminess to your preference.

What is Bang Bang Sauce?

Bang Bang shrimp originated at the Bonefish Grill restaurant chain. The dish consists of crispy fried shrimp tossed in a creamy sauce with the perfect blend of sweet heat: Bang Bang sauce! In its most basic form, Bang Bang sauce is a spin on spicy mayo, consisting of mayonnaise, Thai Sweet Chili Sauce, and sriracha hot sauce. This combination makes it creamy and sweet with a nice kick of spice.

Only 5 Ingredients in This Bang Bang Sauce

You only need five ingredients to make this flavorful sauce. Here’s a quick overview, but you’ll find the full amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Depending on your preference, you can use nonfat, low-fat, or whole milk yogurt.
  • Mayonnaise – Mayo gives this sauce richness, even if you pair it with a lighter yogurt. Feel free to substitute with more yogurt if you prefer.
  • Sweet Chili Sauce – You’ll find this with the Thai ingredients in the Asian section of your local grocery store. This is more of a sweet sauce with some spice, versus a spicy chili pepper sauce like sambal oelek.
  • Rice Vinegar – Sometimes seasoned rice vinegar can have hidden gluten. So be sure to check this if you’re gluten-free.
  • Sriracha Sauce – I recommend this for the heat, but you can also substitute your favorite hot sauce. Adjust the level of spice by adding more or less.

How to Make Bang Bang Sauce

Making Bang Bang sauce is as easy as adding the ingredients to a bowl and giving them a good stir. Once the sauce is smooth and uniform, it’s ready to use right away, or you can store it airtight to keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Use this sauce to dip and drizzle your favorite snacks, appetizers, and meals. I’ve included my favorite serving suggestions below.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • Use the right chili sauce. Thai Sweet Chili Sauce is thick and sweet. If you use a chili paste or sauce that doesn’t have this sweetness, expect an extra-spicy Bang Bang sauce.
  • Make it the original way. That means using all mayonnaise instead of Greek yogurt. It’s definitely a richer condiment this way, but then you can enjoy it dairy-free. Bang Bang sauce made with only mayo will also last longer in the fridge than a sauce that contains yogurt.
  • Make vegan Bang Bang sauce. Make this recipe with vegan mayo and coconut yogurt.
