Looking for a new take on sweet potatoes? It’s time to break out my favorite appliance and make these sweet-spicy air fryer sweet potato cubes! I love making them to serve with tacos, but it’s also great to cook up a big batch to keep in the fridge to add to salads or heat up on a busy morning.
They’re beyond easy, add a welcome hint of kicky flavor to a classic side dish, and come together fast! Here’s why you’ll love this recipe:
- A new take on sweet potatoes. Vibrant sweet potatoes are one of my favorite vegetables – I love making baked sweet potatoes or a sweeter mashed sweet potato dish. These crispy, chipotle-spiked cubes are my new favorite way to make sweet potatoes.
- Easy. I love using my air fryer because it streamlines the cooking process and delivers reliable results every time. The air fryer is my go-to because food cooks in less time than it takes to preheat my oven. In fact, these sweet potato cubes need just 10 minutes to cook in the air fryer.
- Flavorful. The combination of dried spices like garlic and onion powder plus the fresh red onion adds an earthy undertone to these sweet potato cubes. And of course, the chili powder and chipotles add a hint of heat!
- Versatile. This is a great breakfast hash to serve with eggs or chilaquiles. Sprinkle them on top of a salad at lunch. Or have them as a side with Tex-Mex meals like Cilantro Lime Grilled Chicken or Ground Beef Tacos.

How To Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes
A few brief steps are all you’ll need to take to make this easy recipe! See how to do it below. Find the detailed instructions in the recipe card lower down.
- Combine ingredients. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F and add the sweet potatoes with the onion, oil, chipotle puree, and spices to a bowl.
- Mix. Toss well to coat the potatoes.
- Air fry. Place the mixture in the air fryer basket and air fry for 10-15 minutes.
Tips for the Best Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes
- Soak the sweet potatoes. This is a method that works well when you’re making potato or sweet potato fries. Soaking the sweet potatoes for at least 30 minutes can help remove excess starch, resulting in a crisper final result. You can give this a try when you make these sweet potato cubes as well.
- Go less spicy. I love spice, but if you don’t like as much heat, you can reduce or omit the chipotle puree. You can also substitute paprika for the chili powder for a hint of flavor without the heat.
- Substitute for the chipotle puree. If you can’t find chipotle puree, pick up a can of chipotles in adobo sauce. Finely mince them to form a paste and use in place of the puree. Or, substitute a thick hot sauce, such as Frank’s Thick Hot Sauce or sriracha.
- Add a garnish. If you feel like dressing up these sweet potato cubes a bit more, scatter some chopped green onions, fresh chopped parsley or cilantro, and a drizzle of hot sauce over the top before serving them.
Proper Storage
If you have any leftover sweet potato cubes, you can tuck them into wraps or save them to munch on another time. Here’s how to store leftovers:
- Fridge – Place the cooled sweet potato cubes in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To Reheat – You can reheat the cubes in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes until warm and crisped up. Or, place them in a microwave-safe bowl and reheat in the microwave at 30-second intervals until warmed through.
Serving Suggestions
You can serve sweet potato cubes as an appetizer or snack, or add them to your dinner plans. They make a wonderful side dish to all sorts of main dishes. Here are a few of my favorite ideas to make it a meal:
- With dips. Keep it easy and serve air fryer sweet potato cubes with a little bowl of sour cream or Greek yogurt, or make some dips! I love sweet potatoes with homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip, Avocado Crema, Honey Mustard Dip, or even Hummus.
- Add a hot dog. Serve a pile of spicy air fryer sweet potato cubes the next time you make juicy Air Fryer Hot Dogs!
- Alongside grilled cheese. A decadent Air Fryer Grilled Cheese is a wonderful accompaniment to spicy sweet potatoes.
- Burgers. Instead of fries, why not serve spicy air fryer sweet potato cubes? Pair these little bites with Black Bean Quinoa Burgers or Air Fryer Hamburgers.
- Toss in salads. For a flavorful addition to salads, throw in some sweet potato cubes! Try them instead of the butternut squash in my recipe for Mixed Green Salad with Butternut Squash or in this Quinoa Salad with Butternut Squash.
