I think the first question is: Who doesn’t love guacamole? If I had my way, I’d top most of my dishes with homemade guacamole and start every meal with a big, heaping bowl of guacamole and chips! If you love guacamole as much as I do, you’ll love my version. This easy guacamole recipe is endlessly adaptable and kid-approved. Plus, it’s a great recipe for kids of all ages to make – lots of mashing!
One of the highlights of easy guacamole recipe is that it doesn’t contain any chunks of raw onions or jalapeños, making it a great low FODMAP choice that’s better for those with IBS or sensitive stomachs. If you do want it a bit more spicy, you can adjust the heat by adding as little or as much chipotle or chili powder as you like and you won’t be dependent on the spice level of the jalapeño. Here are a few more reasons why we love this easy guacamole recipe:
- So creamy. I love how creamy this easy guacamole recipe is, thanks in large part to the lack of extras like raw onions. I do include garlic in the ingredients list, but you can easily omit it or swap garlic powder or garlic salt if you want a bit of garlicky flavor without the actual raw garlic.
- Ideal for all. As mentioned, this recipe is not only kid-friendly, it also suits those who may have sensitive stomachs. And, it’s naturally gluten free!
- Easy. In minutes you will be able to whip up this guacamole, using only a potato masher or fork. No blending, processing, or complicated processes are needed.
What You’ll Need
Guacamole stars, of course, avocados! This recipe needs just a few more ingredients to make gucamole perfection. Scroll down to the recipe card at the end of this post for the full ingredient amounts.
- Avocados: See my tips in the next section for how to choose the best avocados.
- Lime: You can use more lime juice to taste as you like.
- Garlic: This is an optional addition for a bit more flavor. You could also use garlic powder.
- Chipotles: I use chipotles in adobo or chili powder depending on what I have on hand. Just be sure your brand of chipotles in adobo is gluten free.
- Cilantro: Feel free to omit the cilantro if you don’t have it.
- Salt: I use kosher salt to taste
- Garnish: Chopped tomatoes, optional.
How To Pick The Best Avocados
Ripe avocados are essential to making the best homemade guacamole. Skip right over those rock-hard avocados – they will need to ripen before you can use them in a dip. You’ll know an avocado is ripe first by its color which will be a very dark green or black. Then, give it a gentle squeeze: the avocado should have a slight give but should still be firm. You do not want to use a mushy or very soft avocado because it will be overripe and possibly rotten.
How To Make Homemade Guacamole
Here’s a look at how to make this easy recipe. Find the detailed instructions in the recipe card lower down.
- Prep the avocados. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scrape the flesh into a bowl. Mash them up a bit.
- Add lime juice. Immediately squeeze the lime juice over the avocados.
- Finish. Add the remaining ingredients.
- Mash. Now mash everything together until smooth.
Tips & Variations
A few simple tips will help you make this wonderful dip. Start with those ripe avocados you’ve just learned how to identify, and the rest of the recipe will come together in minutes.
- Add lime juice immediately. To help prevent the avocados from browning, juice the lime over the avocado right away.
- Eat it soon after making it. I recommend eating this guacamole right away because it will have the best color. If you want to make it ahead or want to give the flavors time to blend more, store it in the refrigerator with plastic wrap pressed right against the surface to minimize browning.
- Ways to cut an avocado. There are a few different methods you can use to cut your avocados. With a knife, carefully cut around the avocado to slice it in half lengthwise, then grab each half and twist to separate them. Bang your knife into the pit and twist to remove it, then scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Or, use a 3-in-1 Avocado Tool.
- Different methods for mashing. You can easily mash the avocado with a fork or potato masher, or use an avocado masher or mortar and pestle as I’ve shown in the photos.
- Try lemon juice. Lime juice is a traditional addition to guacamole, but you can substitute lemon juice if you like for a similar, tarter flavor.
- Add-ins: Yes, I know I said this is an easy and kid-friendly guacamole recipe and I’m sticking with that! However, you can use this general method as a base for add-ins if you like. Try chopped red onions, tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños, etc.
Proper Storage
Easy guacamole is the best soon after it’s made, but you can store it for a few days if needed. Place the guacamole in an airtight container. To prevent oxidation (the guacamole turning brown), add a layer of lime or lemon juice to the top of the guacamole. Then press a layer of plastic wrap onto the surface of the dip, pressing out any air bubbles, add the lid of the container, and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. Pour off the layer of juice before serving.
Ways To Serve It
Serve easy guacamole as an appetizer, or add to all sorts of dishes from tacos to salads. Here are a few ideas for how to serve this wonderful dip:
- With chips. My crisp and fresh Air Fryer Tortilla Chips were made to be served with homemade guacamole! Or use your chip of choice or make Air Fryer Kale Chips.
- In wraps. Make a batch of Homemade Gluten Free Wraps/Tortillas, fill them with shredded chicken or Instant Pot Pinto Beans, and add a scoop of homemade guacamole.
- On burrito bowls. Add a big dollop of guacamole to burrito bowls like my Beef Burrito Bowl with Cilantro Lime Rice or Crockpot Mexican Chicken Burrito Bowls.
- Tacos. Guacamole is perfect on tacos. I love it for breakfast with Salsa Egg Tacos, and it’s equally as great on other kinds of tacos like Baked Chicken Tacos, Easy Instant Pot Ground Beef Tacos, or Easy Fish Stick Tacos.
- Sandwiches or toast. Make a loaf of Gluten Free Sandwich Bread, spread slices with a little guacamole, and add veggies and cheese to make a vegetarian sandwich, or top it with slices of turkey and cheese for a flavorful lunch. You can even use it to add a little extra flavor to avocado toast.

Love guacamole! Kid friendly sounds perfect to me, and your addition of adobo chilis is DELISH! Hugs, Terra
I call it kid-friendly, but really it is Me-friendly!
Love your take on guacamole, the chipotle peppers sounds like a fantastic addition! (We usually add a fresh jalapeno pepper)
I like the chipotle. I don’t love the fresh jalapenos, so this was a nice way to get the kick.
You’re a busy Mommy! Thanks for taking the time to post.
Yes, life has been busy, but I love posting and interacting with people, so I will try to keep up a bit. It is a good stress release for me.
How is the Potty Training going? We are just about to dive in as well! YIKES – so scared of a middle-of-the-aisle-piss-on-the-floor-in-Target situation.
Ugh, I know, I am nervous about that too, so we stayed home for several days. He tends to hold it. Only a couple of accidents, but usually he just waits till he gets a diaper for nap or bedtime. So frustrating!
That sounds like fun. NOT. I am contemplating going hard-core – naps and overnight all at once to avoid some of that. I figure we will most likely be naked (him, not me) and confined to the house for at least a week but then maybe it will be over with? Are you doing stickers or a reward?
Good luck! He is always soaked after naps and in the morning, even before we started training, so I am afraid to go that far just yet. We are doing stickers and a small piece of chocolate.
LOVE! And the kiddo, well, he’s just adorable!
Aww, thank you, Katrin!
