The Best Red Velvet Desserts

The beauty of red velvet is in its, well, velvety texture and gorgeous red hue. A classic red velvet layer cake, filled and frosted with vanilla buttercream or cream cheese frosting for a tangy flavor contrast, is always a hit. Or bake red velvet cupcakes for a handheld version of the traditional cake! Save a few pieces of leftover red velvet cake, chop them into bits, and tuck them into homemade ice cream for an unexpected twist and vivid pop of color to make the ultimate in red velvet desserts.

I also love to bake red velvet cookies and add white chocolate chips in a flavorful take that also mimics the look of a red velvet cake. And you can branch out into any type of red velvet dessert you like – cheesecake, brownies, cheesecake brownies, donuts, even whoopie pies! Check out my list of red velvet desserts below to get started.

What Flavor is Red Velvet?

The flavor of red velvet is what I’d describe as a light chocolate flavor because you add a little bit of unsweetened cocoa powder to whatever red velvet dessert you’re making. The red food coloring brings beautiful color but will not affect the flavor at all. However, red velvet is not a true chocolate cake because it doesn’t use quite as much cocoa powder as you would in a traditional chocolate cake. And you won’t top it with chocolate frosting! As mentioned, a red velvet cake or cupcake is typically topped with cream cheese or vanilla buttercream frosting.
