Why You’ll Love These Frozen Pizza Hacks
Delicious Details
- Cuisine Inspiration: Italian
- Primary Cooking Method: Oven
- Dietary Info: Gluten-free option
- Skill Level: Easy
Everyone loves pizza night, but sometimes you just don’t have time to make your gluten free pizza dough from scratch. And when you are gluten free, there aren’t a lot of options for takeout or delivery. But that doesn’t mean you are stuck with just plain or pepperoni. Whether you just need to use up leftovers or want to try my ideas below to transform your frozen pizza into a gourmet creation, I’ve got everything you need to know to make frozen pizza better. Here’s why you’ll love these tips…
- Celiac-safe. Cross-contamination can be a big risk, even when you try to order a pizza, so buying a brand you trust, like Gluten Free Thin & Crispy Pizza from Freschetta (the original sponsor of this post a few years ago), is an easy way to enjoy a slice without concern.
- Ultimate shortcut. Making the crust is the part of making pizza that takes the longest, with shredding the cheese coming in a close second. This takes those steps out of the equation, so you can have a custom pizza even on busy nights. It takes only a few extra minutes to add anything you love, from veggies to meat and even fun salad pizzas, and then bake them according to the package instructions.
- Super versatile. Yes, I share four different options for transforming your frozen pizza, but the options are endless. Use your favorite toppings, sprinkle on anything you have in the fridge, or let everyone personalize their own portion.
What You’ll Need
Obviously, you’ll need your frozen pizza. A couple of these recipes use a plain cheese pizza and a couple use pepperoni, but really you can switch them up. Here are the four variations. You’ll find the full amounts and detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Hawaiian Pizza
- Chopped pineapple. Fresh or from a can
- Cheddar cheese. I like sharp cheddar.
Antipasto Pizza
- Salami. Cut it into thin strips. You can use any kind of salami you like.
- Olives. It’s your choice whether you use black, green, kalamata, or a mix.
- Roasted red peppers. The ones from a jar are fine.
- Fresh mozzarella. The mellowness of fresh mozzarella is a nice balance to the shredded mozzarella that is already on the frozen pizza. But you can just add more mozzarella shredded from a block if that’s all you have.
- Grated parmesan cheese.
- Balsamic vinegar reduction. For drizzling after it’s baked. You can omit this.
Broccoli Tomato Pizza
- Broccoli. You’ll want to use cooked broccoli, either fresh or frozen that’s been steamed or feel free to use leftover roasted broccoli.
- Chopped tomatoes. Any kind of fresh tomato will do.
- Fresh mozzarella. Again, I like using a ball of fresh mozz in this case.
- Grated parmesan cheese.
- Black pepper.
Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza
- Grated parmesan.
- Sliced cooked chicken. You can buy a package of pre-cooked chicken, a grocery store rotisserie chicken, or leftover grilled chicken.
- Romaine lettuce. This is classic for Caesar and won’t wilt too much on the warm pizza, but feel free to use iceberg for crunch or even arugula for a peppery bit.
- Caesar dressing. I like to use my Greek Yogurt Caesar Dressing, but you can use your favorite recipe or bottled dressing.
Tips for Success
- Consider cooking time. The instructions for these frozen pizza hacks are based on a cooking time of 12-16 minutes. If you buy a frozen pizza that is larger or thicker and takes longer to cook, you will want to bake the pizza partially, then add the toppings so that they will be in the oven for the final 15-ish minutes of cooking time.
- Adjust quantities. Again, the ingredient amounts will cover the Freschetta pizza, which is a fairly standard frozen pizza size. But you can adjust if you buy a personal pizza or a larger one.
- Get creative. This is really just a starting point. You can be inspired by any or your favorite pizzas when you customize your frozen pizza, whether it’s a hearty Supreme Pizza or a Butternut Squash Pizza.
Make it a Meal
These frozen pizza hacks will save you lots of time, so you may want to add a main or a side. It’s definitely easy to just dig into a plate full of pizza slices. But if you want to round things out a bit, here are some ideas for what to enjoy with your pizza.
- Add a salad. Go with greens like an Italian-Style Wedge Salad or add other veggies with Caprese Zoodles Salad. Or it can be a side to a hearty Italian Chopped Salad.
- Serve a protein. Your pizza dinner will be more satisfying if you add a bowl of Gluten Free Meatballs or Prosciutto-Wrapped Chicken Tenders.
- Have some veggies. A bag of frozen veggies always works, but it’s more fun to have Asparagus Fries or Spinach Artichoke Cheesy Cauliflower Bread Sticks.
- Don’t forget dessert. Whether you have a scoop of easy No-Churn Nutella Ice Cream or go all out with Tiramisu, it’s always a good idea to end with something sweet.
