How to Make Chocolate-Dipped Marshmallows for Christmas

Chocolate-dipped marshmallows are a fun and easy treat to make for the holidays. They are naturally gluten free, plus they are no-bake and don’t require special decorating skills.

The basics

  • Marshmallows – any bag of large marshmallows will do. Use your favorite brand, checking they are gluten free, if needed.
  • Melting chocolates – you can use milk, white, or dark chocolate. There are even various colored candy coatings out there. You’ll want to opt for melting chocolate wafers like those from Wilton or blocks of candy coating like CandiQuik. These are tempered so that they cool and harden to a smooth and shiny finish. Baking chocolate and chocolate chips will give you a cloudy coating. Safe to eat, but not as pretty.

Start by melting the chocolate of your choice according to the package directions. You can melt it in a double boiler on the stove. But the microwave is probably the easiest option.

Typically you’ll add the chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl. Then reduce the power to 50% on your microwave and run it in 30-second intervals, stirring each time till all the chocolate is melted.

Dip the top of each marshmallow into the melted chocolate and decorate as desired.

The decorations

This is where you can have some fun. Use holiday sprinkles, little candy Christmas lights, snowflakes, colored sugar. I love to get a sprinkle assortment pack so I have lots of options.

Even add more flavor with chopped toffee or toasted pecans or coconut.

Or for cute little treats to enjoy all winter long, you can make your marshmallows look like little snowman or mugs of peppermint hot cocoa.

How to decorate snowman marshmallows

Just dip the tops of your marshmallows in white chocolate and add a little snowman face. You can keep it simple and just add a carrot nose and some coal eyes. Or you can go all out by adding a bowtie, some holly, a hair bow, or anything else you like.

If you check your local Walmart, Target, craft store, or cake decorating supply shop, you might find a kit that has all of the Christmas character decorations you need.

If not, you can find the items individually or use your creativity.

How to decorate hot cocoa marshmallows

Besides the marshmallows and chocolate, all you need are mini candy canes.

Cut off the hook of the mini candy cane and trim it down till it looks like a little handle for a cup. Then chop up the rest of the candy cane and place the bits and pieces in a small bowl.

Dip the top of the marshmallow into the dark chocolate and roll the edge into the chopped candy cane so that it just goes around the rim.

Now dip the ends of the candy cane hooks into the white chocolate and hold it in place on the marshmallow until it is just set enough that you can place it down to firm up completely.
