While this sweet Peanut Butter Dessert Hummus may taste like cookie dough, it’s really a healthy snack! A quick and easy recipe with only four ingredients, it’s flourless and gluten free. The kids will love scooping it up with fruit, veggies, graham crackers, or even just a spoon!

Break out the fruit and veggies and graham crackers, because it’s time to make a quick and easy snack that is secretly healthy. The kids absolutely love this one!

With only four ingredients, it is super quick and easy to make this healthy snack. While I wouldn’t recommend trying to bake it into Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies, it does taste like cookie dough. However, this flourless dip is completely gluten free. Plus it’s easy to make dairy-free and vegan.

The kids will love finding it with some carrots or celery in their lunch box. Or serve it with apples or bananas for dipping as an after school snack. And it even makes a yummy dessert dip for graham crackers and strawberries.

What is dessert hummus?

“Hummus” is the Arabic word for chickpeas. However, when most of us use this word, we are typically referring to the dip or spread made from chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and tahini, which is sesame seed paste. Sometimes they are flavored with things like roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes, or you can even make roasted broccoli hummus.

A new trend of sweet hummus dips has become increasingly popular. The savory ingredients are replaced with flavors like cocoa powder or cinnamon, and it is sweetened with sugar, honey, or even maple syrup, like in Maple Walnut Sweet Potato Hummus. This gives it a taste and texture very similar to cookie dough, but without using flour or raw eggs.

You usually make sweet hummus without tahini. Instead, it is often replaced with nut butter, like the peanut butter used in this recipe.

Is sweet hummus good for you?

It might be called “dessert hummus”, but it is truly a healthy snack.

Chickpeas are full of protein and fiber. Peanut butter adds more protein as well as healthy unsaturated fats. Just be sure to choose a peanut butter that does not include added sugar or other ingredients – I prefer to use a natural peanut butter where the only ingredients are peanuts and salt.

And it is sweetened with just a bit of honey (or maple syrup or agave for a vegan option), so there is not even much added sugar.

Dessert Hummus Ingredients

You only need four simple pantry ingredients plus whatever you want to enjoy with your peanut butter dip. Check out the recipe card for the full amounts, but keep reading for more helpful information about this recipe.

  • Canned chickpeas. Rinsed and drained, with skins removed if you prefer. A low sodium is recommended, but you can use any you have.
  • Peanut butter. Traditional or natural both work fine. Creamy or crunchy is fine too, but the peanut bits in the crunchy peanut butter will get pureed while making the hummus.
  • Honey. Or make it vegan by using maple syrup, agave nectar, or brown rice syrup. The maple syrup will impart a slightly different (though still delicious) flavor.
  • Milk. Your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk will work just fine. Another alternative is to use the liquid drained from the can of chickpeas if you want to avoid milk altogether.

How to Make Peanut Butter Hummus

It really doesn’t get any easier than this!

Blend the ingredients. Place the chickpeas, peanut butter, and honey in the bowl of a food processor or blender. Pulse a few times to start to blend the ingredients.

Adjust the consistency. Add milk and continue to puree until smooth and blended, adding more milk, if necessary, to achieve your desired consistency.

Serve or store. Transfer the dessert hummus to a bowl and serve right away, or cover and refrigerate for up to a week.

Tips for Success

  • Make it smoother. After you drain, rinse, and dry the chickpeas, you can toss them right in. However, to make the hummus even more smooth, you can remove the skins. I do this by rolling them between layers of paper towels and then popping off the skins. It takes some time, but when I have the time, it is worth it.
  • Adjust the texture. Milk is used to achieve the desired consistency. I recommend starting with about two tablespoons, and adding more if needed. You can use dairy milk or a non-dairy alternative like almond milk or oat milk. You can even use the liquid from the can of chickpeas if you prefer.
  • Keep it refrigerated. Store your peanut butter hummus in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will last for up to 6 or 7 days, but if it begins to look or smell off, discard it immediately. I do not recommend freezing it.

Peanut Butter Dessert Hummus Variations

  • Spice it up. Try adding spices like cinnamon or ginger, or even vanilla extract.
  • Make it chocolaty. Blend in cocoa powder for that chocolate and peanut butter combo like this Chocolate Peanut Butter Hummus Cookie Dough Ball or stir in some chocolate chips.
  • Add texture. Sprinkle chopped peanuts or Strawberry Peanut Butter Granola on top.
  • Add something sweet. Swirl in marshmallow fluff or top with mini marshmallow bits to make it tastes like a fluffernutter. Or drizzle with a little extra honey or even caramel.
  • Make it PB&J. Grab your favorite jelly and make Peanut Butter and Jelly Hummus!

Serving Suggestions

This dessert hummus is perfect to pack in a lunchbox or have on hand for after-school snacks. It’s also perfect to add to a Kids Snack Platter or a tray of Apple Nachos. No matter how you serve it, you need things to dip! Here are some ideas.

  • Fruit. Scoop it up with apple or pear slices, use it on Peanut Butter Banana Snacks, or fill hollowed-out strawberries. You can even use dried fruit and make stuffed dates or figs.
  • Vegetables. Dip carrots or make leveled-up ants on a log with celery.
  • Crackers or cookies. A classic would be regular or gluten free graham crackers, but you can also use vanilla wafers or even rice cakes.

While you can use a food processor to make this hummus, it also works well with a high powered blender, such as my favorite from Blendtec. I am a Blendtec Ambassador so earn a commission on sales, but I have been using their products for years. If you purchase a Blendtec and use the code CUPCAKESANDKALECHIPS, you will receive 25% off. The Twister Jar with the scraping lid makes it super easy to make thicker recipes like hummus where you need to scrape down the sides frequently.
