Why You’ll Love Chef Salad on a Stick

  • Cuisine Inspiration: American
  • Primary Cooking Method: No-cook
  • Dietary Info: Gluten-free, Low carb
  • Skill Level: Easy

It’s time to skip the bowls and forks, but still enjoy a salad. Yes, these salad sticks are one of my kids’ favorite ways to eat salad, especially when they dunk them in this easy ranch dressing. Truly, they are one of my party appetizer staples because my guests can never resist these fun little bites, and even picky eaters devour them. Here’s why you’ll love them…

  • So easy. Since everything is more fun when stuck on a toothpick, I took the meats, cheeses, and veggies that you usually find in a chef’s salad, and skewered them. That’s it!
  • Incredibly versatile. Perfect for a party, picnic, or even in a lunchbox (for kids that are old enough to be trusted with small, sharp objects). Just pair it with your favorite dressing or dip.
  • Customizable. You can definitely change up the choice of deli meats, skip the cheese to make them dairy free, add different veggies, and more to make your chef salad on a stick just the way you like it.
  • Allergy-friendly. No gluten, eggs, or nuts here, and, as I said, you can also skip the dairy. Plus they are low carb too!

Salad Skewers Ingredients

Here’s an overview of what you’ll need to make this recipe. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card for the full amounts and instructions.

  • Deli meats. I use a combination of ham, turkey, and Genoa salami, but feel free to try it with roast beef, sliced chicken, or your favorites.
  • Cheese. Provolone and cheddar are a tasty pairing, but you can also try slices of Muenster, American, or any cheese you like.
  • Tomatoes. Grape or cherry tomatoes will work.
  • Cucumber. Cut in quarters lengthwise and sliced.
  • Lettuce. Boston, Bibb, or Romaine are great options.
  • Salad dressing or dip. Choose your favorite bottle, jar, mix, or homemade recipe.

Proper Storage

Whether you make them in advance or have leftovers, you’ll want to store your chef salad on a stick in the refrigerator. Either tightly wrap your platter with plastic wrap, or transfer them to an airtight container. You can keep them for up to 2 to 3 days. Do not freeze them.
