Worcestershire ketchup is a homemade, gluten free condiment that is better than anything you will ever buy at a grocery store. This is a promise from me to you!
I ate sauerkraut last week. Four times. With hot dogs. And pastrami. Who am I?
My pregnancy cravings have been totally bizarre. This didn’t happen with The Bug. I am not a huge chocolate person when it comes to just eating straight up chocolate. I mean, I loves me some chocolate frosting, chocolate ice cream, chocolate oatmeal, maybe the occasional cupcake or peanut butter cup. But just chocolate candy – rarely happens. Now though, you don’t want to know how many bags of Ghirardelli chocolate chips I have consumed.
But this is not the weird part. The weird part is the salty/savory food cravings that I have never had in my life, and things that I have tried and liked that I never liked before. Like sauerkraut. Hated it as a kid. Hated all things cabbage. Then I had it once in my first trimester, and suddenly, I consider it delicious. I am totally not a potato chip girl, yet back in August, The Hubby and I went away for a weekend, and I had to have potato chips and fries and hot dogs… repeatedly. He was asking the same question as I just did, “Who are you, and what have you done with my fried-food-hating, repulsed-by-processed-meat wife? And can I keep you?”
And don’t get me started on worcestershire ketchup…
Why do you think I make my own? It isn’t just for The Bug and his passion for dipping. Lately I have had a passion for dipping. Which is also why I make my own “fries”. If I were eating the “real” stuff, I would be ginormous. And I love that by making my own ketchup, there is no added sugar or other stuff, and basically it is just flavored tomato paste – totally counts towards your daily veggie consumption.
And this Worcestershire Ketchup – totally fancy pants ketchup. It is somewhere in between plain tomato ketchup and steak sauce. Definitely more complex and interesting than the plain kind. And is a wonderful complement to my fancy French (as in Hebes de Provence – see, serious fancy pantsyness happening) sweet potato fries, though equally delicious with just a basic oven fry. And wait till I tell you about my blue cheese volcano burgers!
I haven’t made my own hot dogs (umm, ewww!), but I did find some tasty, all-beef, organic, gluten-free dogs from Applegate Farms. Obsessed! Give me some ketchup and fries, and I am good to go! Oh, and the sauerkraut with mustard. I still baffle myself.
Is there something you hated as a kid, that you tried again as an adult and now love?
I bet you will love this Worcestershire ketchup!

Enjoy!
Can’t wait to try this recipe, but I do have a question: can I use mustard in a jar instead of dry mustard?
Yes, standard substitution would be about a 1/2 Tablespoon, but maybe try a little less then adjust to taste. I have not tried it myself that way.
We have some dippers at our house! I will certainly be trying this one out!

So glad I found your GF linky!
Don’t mean to be negative but this tasted horrible. Sorry, really didn’t like it.
No worries! We all have different tastes. You win some, you lose some. Anything in particular you didn’t like about it? I always love to experiment with new dip recipes since my little guy loves them
Okay Horrible was a little too harsh. the tomatoe paste was too intense and it seemed like to much Worcestershire, maybe I read it wrong. Is it really a 1/2 cup to 6 ounce Tomatoe paste.
Yes, that is correct, but we tend to like things a bit more acidic and strong flavored. I also love mixing this into burger, so you want that flavor so that it comes through when mixed with the beef. I should have put the note as I did on my balsamic ketchup recipe, but you could use less Worcesteshire, and then adjust the consistency with water. I base my homemade ketchups on this recipe, but found that it was too watery and not vinegary enough for my taste, so I just use all vinegar in place of the vinegar+water http://www.fixmeasnack.com/2010/01/homemade-ketchup/
thanks for your feedback!
What are the “Bites” in the photo with the ketchup?
I’ll be posting my version of them soon (mine is gluten free), but they are based on this recipe – http://mommasmeals.wordpress.com/2012/08/29/healthy-tater-tots-why-simply-potato/
Thanks Brianne!! You’re the Best!! 🙂
No problem!
I adore ketchup and can’t wait to try making my own with your recipe! I hated bananas and nuts as a kid – now I can’t get enough (except for peanuts – still not a fan).
Oh I have never hated bananas, but I didn’t like nuts either! I am not a huge fan of peanuts themselves, but I love peanut butter!
The recipe I’ve been waiting for and all the ingredients are already in the house. Thanks!
Oooh, hope you like it!
